Your Home Office Furniture Need Not Be Expensive, But It Needs To WorkWhat is it about setting up a home office that makes people tighten up the purse strings and decide that saving a few quid is somehow worth sitting in a dingy, ugly and uncomfortable mess of cheapo furniture? If you were to be setting up a “real” office, you would invest in quality; after all, you don’t want to be replacing it in a year because the chairs broke or the upholstery is in tatters. You don’t want your staff calling in sick because the wobbly desk gave them carpal tunnel and this is for a scenario where people might be spending eight hours a day working there. When you set up a home office, you should likely be more aware of the reality that you don’t want to be buying it all over again in a year or two (after all, this is your own personal money we’re talking about now). More importantly, this is a place where you are going to be working and, in all likelihood (given the extended hours that self-employed or home-based workers are known to put in), it will often be for much more than eight hours at a stretch. You don’t want to be looking at a hodgepodge of sickly colours for hours on end, or torturing your back by sitting in a task chair that wouldn’t even pass muster for students on a budget. One option is everyone’s favourite Swedish furniture superstore. They sell a mix of extremely cheap and midrange furniture which might be suitable for home office use; but it’s not the ideal solution for everyone. For one thing, the extremely cheap stuff tends to dominate -it’s what brings people in the doors, after all, especially when they’re pitching so heavily to students and young people looking to furnish their first flat. It can be difficult to visually tell the cheap stuff from the decent stuff unless you’re able to snag a salesperson and they happen to know anything about that section of the store. This, of course, raises a bigger issue; that being furniture designed for working spaces makes up only a small percentage of their sales and floor space, so it can be a challenge to find everything you want in stock. I frequently suggest that my clients consider other options instead. I’m not suggesting that they need to spend a fortune to equip their home office, but there are UK-based companies selling wonderful collections that can help you kit out a home office with stylish and functional pieces at reasonable prices. Some of the best are online and offer the advantage of UK pricing, delivery and expert advice. Related Links N. As a registered workspace designer, Watson is frequently called upon to try to “undo” the mess a well-intentioned amateur has caused by buying the cheapest Office Furniture they could find.
